Poll on DMZ Security, the Military's Response, and Soldier Safety

In an Institute for Reform poll (RIO 2026-06, September 22, 2026, n=1,016), 83.1% said North Korea's installation of fences and barriers and laying of mines on the northern side of the Demilitarized Zone poses a threat to national security (66.0% 'a very serious threat'). Asked how well the South Korean military is responding in the DMZ and border areas, 67.8% gave a negative assessment against 26.4% positive. When soldier safety and mission execution cannot both be secured during DMZ operations, 58.1% chose soldier safety even if operations are partly restricted, while 32.2% chose carrying out the mission despite the risk.
